You bring a good lesson that children know more than parents think that they do, and that honesty is the only path forward. Still, it sounds like it would have been difficult for you even if their relationship had been a legitimate one, but it is clearly the story of two adults who put their desires above the children caught in the middle. I believe that introspection is the key to healing, and understanding how this experience has affected you is half the battle.
